Within the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), dioctahedral smectite acts by more than one mechanism. It has a marked coating property on the GI mucosa due to its high viscosity. This effect strengthens the mucosa! Barrier and protects the mucosa I cells against bacteria and toxins present within the GI lumen. In addition, dioctahedral smectite has high adsorption properties in the lumen of the GIT adsorbing toxins, bacteria and viruses, the main causes of diarrhea in children and adults. As a result of these effects, DIASMECT, as Suspension or Sachets, is an effective treatment to shorten duration and reduce frequency of diarrhea and to relieve associated GI painful symptoms in all age groups.
